Chapter eighteen

“What is it, Jacob?” Abby asked, joining him at the side of the coffin.

Despite herself, she brushed the back of her fingers against Sophie de Valois’s cheek, so perfectly smooth it resembled porcelain. It was cold - so unnaturally cold - that she pulled back with a gasp.

Jacob was too mired in his own thoughts to notice. “The gloves,” he said, pointing. “What do you notice?”

She shook her head.

“The middle finger of her right hand,” he prompted.

“A lump? She’s wearing a ring?”

“Aye,” he said, reaching in and gently sliding the soft leather glove from Sophie’s hand.

As he removed the ring, which was loose, he dropped it with a strangled moan into the coffin and stumbled backward.

Abby retrieved it, puzzled, holding it in her hand. “What is it, Jacob?”

Then she recognised the enamel design. It was the coat of arms of the Standish family of Greenwich.

“That ring,” he said, pointing with a trembling finger. “That ring was given to me by my father and stolen more than a year ago. How the blazes has it found its way onto Sophie de Valois’s corpse?”

Staring, dazed, at the ring, Abby shook her head.

“My sister told me it was cursed,” he said.
